“If you think about it, sometimes life is like a railway station. People come and go all the time, but there are those people waiting for the same train with you. There are people that come along together heading to the same direction as you do. And at some point, there will come a time that your train will get to its final stop. Maybe, that’s only a transit trip before you continue your journey with another train. Maybe this time with different companies.”

Well, aside from trying to be philosophical about train and its station, I always love taking pictures in train station. In Jakarta, you can try to go to Manggarai Station and Jakarta Kota Station. Those two are my top picks if you ask me. I would totally recommend you to go here and try to do some photo hunting. But don’t look too visible with your camera because sometimes the station security officers are not really fan of photography. Up until now, I don’t really have a clear information whether or not it’s (formally) allowed to take pictures in the train station. But why not?

Update on 2017: It’s allowed to take pictures in train station as long as it’s not for commercial use. If it’s for commercial or professional purpose, you need permission to do so.

Try to capture some night scenes to get some good light effects. For example, shoot the carriage from outside to get an interesting contrast. Also look at the architecture and pay attention to the leading lines. With the right angle, you can get some interesting shots here. Avoid commuting hour if you want to do street photography in the Jakarta Commuter Line. Try go above 8 pm. Empty look of the train or station can deliver some sentimental pictures. If you travel heading to Jakarta Kota, you may get some shots of empty train when everyone has gotten off from the train (because Jakarta Kota is the last station). On the other side, if you’re intention is to capture the hustle of people, then follow along the time of most people going to the office or going back home.
